Wells Fargo ChampionshipWells Fargo Championship 2013 Preview

A top quality field turns out for the Wells Fargo Championship at Quail Hollow Country Club. This tournament tends to fall to a leading golfer with six of the ten previous winners having won a major prior to their success here. Rory McIlroy returns to the venue that gave him a shock victory back in 2010 and many will see this as an ideal way to kick-start his season. The course favours golfers with an excellent drive or with great powers of recovery. With that in mind, my first selection is the Spaniard Sergio Garcia.

Although he is still to break his duck in major championships, he is undoubtedly one of the finest talents on the tour and has playing with some consistency of late. He has finished in the top 25 in his last sixteen completed events and lost out here in a play-off in 2005 after shooting two consecutive rounds of 64. He showed up well at the Masters and looks over-priced at 28-1 with Stan James.

It usually pays to stick with players in form and Webb Simpson is certainly in that category. He was just edged out in a playoff by Graeme McDowell in South Carolina two weeks ago and was prominent in this event 12 months ago. It is no surprise that he has been well supported this week but 16-1 is still widely available.

Lucas Glover will have his supporters after a bold showing last week in the Zurich Classic but Kyle Stanley could be the one to take out of that event, finishing third after a final round 67. He can be supported each-way with odds as high as 89-1 on Betfair. It may also be worth including Masters runner-up Angel Cabrera in our portfolio at odds of 61-1. He followed up his brilliant display at Augusta with a victory in Argentina and is clearly in a rich vein of form.
