Volvo World Match Play

Volvo World Match Play 2013 Preview

Belgium’s Nicolas Colsaerts steps out on the European Tour this week as the reigning Volvo World Match Play Champion. The event this year is being held in Bulgaria at the Thracian Cliffs Golf and Beach Resort in Kavarna. The thing about the Match Play format is that it is wide open, unpredictable highlighted by Colsaerts last year, as he only squeezed through to the knockouts after a play off and not winning any of his group matches. It was only on the 18th green that he beat Graeme McDowell in the final. Colsaerts has been in decent form this year and took a top ten finish at the WGC Accenture Match Play back in February.

The big hitter is trading in at around 11/1 though, and not in bad form, but there are perhaps stronger options. England’s Ian Poulter is a match play specialist and can’t be dismissed here. Indeed his best results this season was his place of fourth at the WGC Accenture Match Play. This is where he really comes alive and even though he hasn’t been in great form in stroke play, he will be a big threat here and why bookies have pegged him in as favourite at around 15/2.

But the true value here could well be in Graeme McDowell. Again, he put in a sharp performance at the WGC Accenture Match Play earlier this year and not only that, his all round game has been superb this year, landing four top tens on the PGA from eight starts. He has a bit of momentum, winning the RBC Heritage in a play off and finished runner up in the Volvo World Match Play last year, coming home fifth in 2011. Has the track record and has the form.
