Volvo China Open preview 2013

Volvo China Open

South Africa’s Branden Grace was unstoppable at the Volvo China Open last year, and he is back to defend his title in Tianjin this week on the European PGA Tour. Grace finished three shots clear of the challenge of Belgium’s Nicolas Colsaerts last season, a tremendous 64 in the third round helping him along. There is a tendency to avoid backing a defending champion at an event, because it is a tough call to make to land back to back wins anywhere. Grace has just been a little patchy since mid February as well and at just in double figure at 14/1 perhaps doesn’t look strong enough. Grace was one of the hottest properties in golf on the European Tour last season and has landed two top twenties in two cracks at the Volvo China Open. A solid top ten finish option at 6/5 with Ladbrokes, but value on an outright winner is deeper in the field.

Sweden’s Alex Noren makes a strong 4/5 option for a top ten finish at the Volvo China Open this week. It has been two top six finishes in his last two starts, his third of the season. Playing some wonderfully consistent golf at the moment and has to be trending to a win soon. He has landed two top tens in three starts at the China Open, including a sixth last season where he carded a 3 in the third round. Trending much stronger than Grace in current form and worth backing for a top ten finish for coverage, but strong enough to risk in the Place Market. Braver punters can take 12/1 on him to win outright.

Australian golf is hot at the moment and Marcus Fraser could be worth watching. He lived up to expectations last week at the Ballantines, just losing out in the playoffs and taking a share of second. So not only is he carrying current form, he finished sixth at the Volvo China Open last year as well. The Australian has landed two top tens this season and consistent focus isn’t always there, but at 2/1 for a top ten finish at Ladbrokes, could be worth riding.
