Finland’s Mikko Illonen looks to be superb value for this year’s edition of the Nordea Masters. A winner of the event back in 2007 (when it was known as the Scandinavian Masters) he lines up as good value to back in Stockholm, Sweden this week. The action tees off at the Bro Hof Slott Golf Club for the fifth season in a row and defending champion Lee Westwood is not back to defend his title. Looking at Immonen’s current stats, he is a great fit for a run to the title in this one.
He has landed two top three finishes in his last four starts on the European PGA and his last outing was a T12 at the BMW PGA Championship, where only a rough second round let him down. Otherwise he has been producing some solid golf this season and sitting 15th in the Race to Dubai. His previous win of the event wasn’t at this course, so it doesn’t count in terms of a track record, but he looks in good shape. He dealt with everything that was thrown at him last week at Wentworth, including some inclement weather and still produced some solid driving and iron work.
He was holding his game where others were folding, so that should keep him trending. Tough field with BMW PGA winner Matteo Manassero in the mix, the in form Francesco Molinari and the straight playing Alexander Noren (who goes as favourite). On the back of a third place last year as well at the Nordea Masters, Ilonen looks a good fit.
Stat: Ilonen’s Stroke Average (70.28) in 2013 is the best of his career and his Putts Per Green In Regulation (1.68) this season is his best ever.
