HP Byron Nelson ChampionshipHP Byron Nelson Championship 2013 Preview

Sergio Garcia looked poised to give this column a nice pay-off at 30-1 before falling victim to the infamous 17th at Sawgrass in the Players’ Championship last weekend. The PGA Tour now moves on to TPC Four Seasons for the HP Byron Nelson Championship, another high level event steeped in history.

The field may not have quite the same quality as at Sawgrass and Australia’s Jason Day, so close to winning the Masters at Augusta this year, has been put up as 12-1 favourite by the bookmakers. He won this event three years ago but there may be better value in siding with his compatriot Marc Leishman. He is available at more than twice those odds and also made a bold bid in the Masters and showed up nicely in joint-eighth place last weekend.

A player who has been slightly disappointing so far is South African Louis Oosthuizen. He kicked off his season with a victory but has not featured since. However, there were signs that he was finding his way back into form last week when he fired a round of 67 at Sawgrass. At 22-1 he represents a class act in this field and it is worth including him in our portfolio.

A less obvious candidate for inclusion is Harris English at 66-1. He has the game to get involved this week and finished sixth in New Orleans prior to the Players’ Championship. He has finished in the money on four occasions on Tour and could give us a good run for our money if he can get the putter working for him. Our final selection is Jimmy Walker who has been performing well on a regular basis this season. He has finished in the top four twice and had two further top ten finishes, suggesting that his turn may not be too far away.
