Lee Westwood

BMW PGA Championship Preview

The European Tour this week heads off to the prestigious BMW PGA Championship. Eyeing up what would be a historic hat trick of BMW PGA Championship titles at the Wentworth Club this year, is England’s Luke Donald. Only once before has it been achieved (by Colin Montgomerie) and after defending his title last year, Donald is back for more. It was a cruise to the finish line as well for him on the course at which he excels and grew up around, taking the title by four strokes. It was also the event at which would get him back the world number one spot.

The thirty five year old and his often immaculate iron game, will be a huge draw this week. The famous West Course at Wentworth has been the scene of two great triumphs for Donald, can he convert again? This is the European Tour’s flagship event and he is in as 7/1 favourite to walk away with it for a third time in a row. Solid odds for the action in Surrey, England.

There is quality abound at the top of this field, from Rory McIlroy, Justin Rose and Martin Kaymer. Rose has been one of the most consistent players around the world this year, and has two top ten finishes in his last three BMW PGA Championship outings. The form of Rory McIlroy has been in question, and Martin Kaymer is still struggling to find the form which propelled him to world number one.

But firing so well is Lee Westwood, with four top ten finishes in a row on the PGA Tour, including the Masters and the Players Championship. Westwood was beaten in a play off in the final by Donald two years ago at Wentworth and that followed a top ten in 2010. Was inconsistent here last year, two solid rounds ruined by two poor ones. Still, can’t ignore the all round game and consistency of him at the moment.

There could also be value in Graeme McDowell, who has been in fine fettle all season and comes off the back of a win at the Volvo World Match Play. Has never really threatened at this event, but his current form could break the top ten.

Stat: Westwood and Rose have both landed two top ten finishes in their last three attempts at the event.
